A Project of the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives
Historica Fairs, originally known as Heritage Fairs, were a national initiative of the Charles R. Bronfman Foundation to create a better understanding of Canadian history. The first fair took place in 1993 in Winnipeg and since then, the Historica Fairs Program has grown to include more than 400,000 students across Canada. In 2007, British Columbia had more than 32,000 students in 137 schools and 43 School Districts participating in Historica Heritage Fairs. In April 2008, Vernon added its name to that list.
Historica Fairs are events that actively involve students from Grades 4 - 9. In Vernon, we invite Grades 3, 10, 11 & 12 to participate as well. Along with students, the Fairs involve community organizations, businesses, service clubs and many other volunteers in a celebration of Canadian history and traditions.
The Historica Fairs Program encourages students to explore Canadian heritage in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. Students select a topic about Canadian heroes, legends, milestones or achievements, research it, then, using the medium of their choice, create a project that is shared with the general public. It is this sharing that becomes the focal point for life long learning.
